While Europe has historically had a substantial meat diet, the appetite for meat is now on the rise in countries like China and India. However, the craving for meat comes with critical consequences. In China, changes in eating habits contribute to increasing health problems among the population. In Paraguay, the export of food to Europe leads to extreme poverty, while in France and Germany, extensive agriculture poses a threat to groundwater, and the climate is suffering globally. Many animals raised for meat are treated like machines, living out their short lives crammed together in smelly barns.
